Our Beliefs

The African American Methodist Episcopal Zion Church professes the historical faith in God, who by Himself- outpouring, was manifest incarnate in Jesus Christ for our salvation. By God’s grace and the power of His Holy Spirit all believers become the new humanity. The incarnation having reached its completion in Jesus, who is the Christ, is continuing in the Church and is overcoming the calamity of the human predicament. We strive in the hope that the Church will grow from sinful existence through purification to oneness with God.

The mission of The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is to increase our love for God and to help meet the needs of humankind by “Loving God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with our entire mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.” Implicit in this statement is the belief that the church should have a positive relationship to humankind horizontally. We also share in the mission of His Son Jesus Christ, in “healing the sick, helping the blind to receive sight, the lame to walk, the leper to be cleansed, the deaf to hear, the dead to be raised, and the poor to have the Good News preached to them.” – Luke 4:18.

Our church belongs to the South Atlantic Episcopal District of the African American Episcopal Zion Church. The Right Reverend Eric L. Leake is our Presiding Prelate, Reverend Sharon A. Browning is our Presiding Elder, Mrs. Jean McMurray Leake serves as our Missionary Supervisor, and Reverend LeCounte P. Nedab II is the Pastor of our church.

Church History

The vision for setting up a permanent place for worship began as early as 1870. On February 20, 1874, twelve persons founded White Hill. They obtained a charter, which allowed them to buy real estate and personal property. A religious organization was established, and worship service was held in a brush arbor. Reverend Joseph Jackson served as pastor.

On February 24, 1881, approximately one acre of land was purchased and a frame building constructed. In the late 1920’s, the building was torn down to make way for a second building. While the new building was being built, church services and programs were held in the church yard. The church name, White Hill, originated because of the white sand on the hill. In the early 1920’s White Hill School was founded.

The church building on the hill served for 72 years. Under the leadership and vision of Reverend W. O. Thompson, and support of the church congregation, plans were implemented for a new edifice. With a plan and a vision, the building project went forward.

An inspiring Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on August 27, 2000. Less than two weeks later, the construction crew began clearing land. The building was completed in August 2001. March-in-Day from the old to new church was observed on August 26, 2001 – exactly one year from the ground-breaking date. Mortgage on the church was paid in full within ten years. To God be the Glory!

Since February 20, 1874 until present, eighteen pastors have served White Hill. Reverend W. O. Thompson served as pastor for 40 years. Currently, Rev. LeCounte P. Nedab II serves as Pastor.
